The healing process from a family separation can begin in a collaborative divorce settlement. It is a great opportunity to work together with the help of professionals towards a single goal to create an effective agreement for a separating family. In this setting, I listen to my clients’ needs, empower them with honest legal advice, and work with the parties and the collaborative professionals to help my clients get some form of closure through a good agreement. I have practiced family law since 1999, and I have seen many painful and expensive journeys through our court process. It led me to get my mediator’s license in 2012, so I could help family law parties get their cases resolved by agreement at a mediation table rather than trial.
Most importantly, the collaborative process gives children the best chance to adjust in a healthy way to a new living custodial arrangement. Your children adjust best when they have a roadmap for their future that was created by the parents rather than a judge. Through my many years in the courtroom and mediating cases, I have seen many different child custody arrangements, problems/pitfalls, and successes. I use these experiences to help advise my client and the collaborative team to create a custodial arrangement that best fits the unique situation of each child and family.
